This day is often celebrated with special prayers and rituals offered up to Shiva, notably the Abhishek. Mahashivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the 'Tandava' and it is the day that Lord Shiva was married to Parvati. This festival is of utmost importance to the devotees of Lord Shiva. Maha Shivratri (Sivarathiri) is a festival celebrated every year on the 13th day in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Phalguna in the Hindu calendar. Other popular names associated with Shiva are Mahadeva, Mahesha, Maheshvara, Shankara, Shambhu, Rudra, Rishikesha(Man of knowledge), Hara, Trilochan, Devendra (meaning Chief of the gods) and Trilokinatha (meaning Lord of the three realms). Shiva is usually worshiped in the form of Lingam. The main iconographical attributes of Shiva are the third eye on his forehead, the snake Vasuki around his neck, the adorning crescent moon, the holy river Ganga flowing from his matted hair, the trishula as his weapon and the damaru as his musical instrument. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga and arts. In benevolent aspects, he is depicted as an omniscient Yogi who lives an ascetic life on Mount Kailash, as well as a householder with wife Parvati and his two children, Ganesha and Kartikeya, and in fierce aspects, he is often depicted slaying demons. Shiva also has many benevolent and fearsome forms. At the highest level, Shiva is regarded as limitless, transcendent, unchanging and formless.
